Its predecessor, the Inter-Island Airways, was incorporated in 1929. Its first flight was from Honolulu to Hilo using a Sikorsky S-38 with intermediary stops at Molokai and Maui. Inter-Island Airways changed its name to Hawaiian Airlines in 1941 and phased out older Sikorsky models. Acquisition of modern aircraft was undertaken in subsequent years.

In 2007, Hawaiian Airlines forged an agreement with Air New Zealand for the latter to perform extensive maintenance on their fleet of Boeing 767. HAL also commenced flights to Manila in the Philippines the same year and to Oakland in 2008.
