Northwest Airlines
Northwest Airlines Inc. (NWA) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines Inc. with main hubs at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Memphis International Airport, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Tokyo Narita International Airport. It focus city is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. It is headquartered in Eagan, Minnesota.
Northwest Airlines was formed in 1926 as Northwest Airways initially to deliver mail for the U.S. Post Office Department. The next year it began to fly passengers and in 1928 commenced its first international service to Winnipeg, Canada. Northwest Airways was renamed Northwest Airlines in 1934 and was publicly traded in 1941.
In 2004, it carried 5.1 million passengers across the Pacific Ocean, more than any U.S. airline. NWA was considered sixth largest airline in the world in terms of domestic and international scheduled passenger miles flown in 2006.
Merger talks between Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines started in early months of 2008. It was finalized when the United States Department of Justice approved the merger on the 29th of October 2008. The merger made Delta Air Lines the world’s largest passenger airline.
Northwest will be fully integrated into Delta. Meantime, it retains its brand name until the process has been completed. The Northwest brand will be gradually phased out.
